Lower-extremity Dynamometry as a Novel Outcome Measure in a Double-blind, Placebo-controlled, Feasibility Trial of Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) for HIV-associated Myelopathy
Conclusion: We conclude that an adequately powered clinical trial of IVIG for HIVM would likely require a prolonged recruitment period and multiple participating sites. Lower limb dynamometry is a useful outcome measure for HIVM, which might also be useful in other HIV-related gait disorders. KEYWORDS: Dynamometry, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), myelopathy INTRODUCTION Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated myelopathy (HIVM) is a rare but well-described neurologic complication of HIV; it was first described early in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic, and i...

Association between the levels of serum free testosterone and lifestyle-related diseases in people living with HIV
CONCLUSIONS: Hypertension and the serum hemoglobin A1c level as a standard parameter for diabetes were significantly associated with low serum fTST levels in Japanese male PLWH. This study suggested that the sex-hormone replacement therapy could be a preferred option for PLWH with low serum fTST levels to manage their long-term complications.</P>.PMID:35747961 | DOI:10.2174/1570162X20666220623152941

High antiretroviral coverage and viral suppression prevalence in Japan: an excellent profile for downstream HIV care spectrum.
Abstract To understand the effectiveness of Japan's health care system for HIV/AIDS, including prevention, diagnosis, access to antiretroviral treatment, and treatment outcomes, clinical information on HIV/AIDS cases was collected through questioners sent to 377 registered HIV/AIDS clinics in Japan. The data were collected in 2009 and 2014, and 9,040 and 14,569 cases were obtained, respectively. Prevalence of on-treatment cases linked to care were 69.6% and 87.8% in 2009 and 2014, respectively, demonstrating improvement in treatment coverage over the recent 5 years. The proportion of cases with undetectable HIV RN...

Monthly Shots of HIV Drugs Are as Effective as Daily Pills, 2 Big Studies Show
SEATTLE (AP) — Monthly shots of HIV drugs worked as well as daily pills to control the virus that causes AIDS in two large international tests, researchers reported Thursday. If approved by regulators in the United States and Europe, the shots would be a new option for people with HIV and could help some stay on treatment. Instead of having to remember to take pills, patients instead could get injections from a doctor or nurse each month. “Some people will be thrilled” at the convenience, said Mitchell Warren, executive director of AVAC, an AIDS advocacy group. Condoms remain the most widely available and...

Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Low Free Testosterone Levels in Japanese Men with Well-controlled Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.
CONCLUSION: The men in the study experienced a more rapid decline in fTST levels with age than men in the general population (-0.161 pg/mL/year). Serum fTST levels in men with HIV infection should be monitored, especially in older men and those with low hemoglobin levels. PMID: 32684150 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Dietary Vitamin D3 Deficiency Increases Resistance to Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis Infection in Mice
Conclusion Altogether, our results indicate that dietary VitD deficiency is able to decrease lesion growth and provide an increase in Th1 response in C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice upon L. (L.) amazonensis infection, although it does not decrease parasite burden in either of the murine models used. Thus, VitD may contribute to host susceptibility to murine tegumentary leishmaniasis. Further studies on the influence of immunonutrition in the leishmaniases are needed to better understand the immunobiology of these diseases. Evaluation of Loopamp ™ Leishmania Detection Kit and Leishmania Antigen ELISA for Post-Elimination Detection and Management of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Bangladesh
With reduced prevalence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the Indian subcontinent (ISC), direct and field deployable diagnostic tests are needed to implement an effective diagnostic and surveillance algorithm for post-elimination VL control. In this regard, here we investigated the diagnostic efficacies of a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay (Loopamp™ Leishmania Detection Kit, Eiken Chemical CO., Ltd, Japan), a real-time quantitative PCR assay (qPCR) and the Leishmania antigen ELISA (CLIN-TECH, UK) with different sampling techniques and evaluated their prospect to incorporate into post-elimination VL co...
